ENDOMETRIOSIS AND YOUR ABILITY TO GET PREGNANT

Endometriosis, pregnancy and miscarriage

Endometriosis has always been somewhat of a mystery to me...and it turns out the medical community is slightly baffled as well.   If you're not familiar with endometriosis, it is a condition where the uterine cells from the uterine lining somehow grow outside the uterus.  Some sources say the condition may be caused by wearing tight clothing (which puts pressure on the uterus and forces the lining up rather than out during the menstrual cycle).  Other theories say that women may actually be born with the condition rather than developing it later in life.  Either way, it can become a problem if a woman wants to conceive.  Endometriosis can hinder a pregnancy or a woman's ability to become pregnant.  There are hormone like substances with this condition called prostaglandins. Endometriosis causes an overproduction of prostaglandins  and if woman becomes pregnant or is

pregnant, this could cause the uterine lining to shed ending in a miscarriage. Additionally, overproduction of prostaglandins could cause contractions so powerful that the egg moves too fast before conception can occur.

BABY GENDER PREDICTION, CHINESE BIRTH CALENDAR

Predicting Babies Gender - The Chinese Birth Calendar

Guest Post By Zhang Xiao Hong
The Chinese Birth Calendar is such an amazing discovery that it is still used widely across the world as a way to predict the sex of your child. Although there are many ways to predict the sex of your child with science, such as an ultrasound, the Chinese Birth Chart has said to be as accurate as 99%. Given that the age of the Chinese Birth Calendar is truly unknown, it is still an accurate tool in determining the sex of your child.

The calendar, which is also called the Chinese Baby Chart, was discovered in an ancient tomb near the capital city of Beijing over 700 years ago. The only place that you may view the original chart now is the Institute of Science, also located in Beijing.
While the chart can be very confusing and overwhelming when you first look at it, the calendar is easy to decipher once you take a little time and read the directions. The first step in determining the
sex of your baby based on the Chinese Birth Calendar is to figure out what month your baby was conceived in. It is a simple step but often people can forget very easily exactly when. If in doubt, the best way to figure this out is to just take the due date or the birth date of your child and go back nine

months. For normal, full term babies, this is the easiest way to do it.
After you determine the month the baby was conceived in, you need to figure out how old the mother will be at the birth of the baby. Of course, the only way to estimate this is to go off of the doctor's due date that was given. Once that is figured out, you go down the chart and where the two points meet is where it will tell you the sex of your child.
This is truly an amazing tool and something that has been used for centuries upon centuries with an eerie amount of accuracy. Some professionals will even tell you that it can be more accurate then ultrasounds, although we still recommend using science over an ancient tool. Along with this tool and your ultrasound, you should be able to get a good idea of what the sex of your child should be. However, if you were like me, the ultrasound and the Chinese Baby Chart conflicted. The funny thing about my situation is that the baby chart was correct, and the ultrasound was wrong. So, which one is really better?

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP, ST. GERARD FOR PREGNANCY

Although I grew up Catholic but now consider myself somewhat non-denominational now, I still find it comforting to learn about and pray to saints with some of the many struggles in life.  Saint Gerard and Our Lady of Perpetual help are said to help protect pregnancy and they can help those who are trying to conceive.  I have a page on my website devoted to saints for infertility and I have a page devoted to prayers to St. Gerard and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

WEIGHT BEFORE PREGNANCY, COMPLICATIONS, BIRTH DEFECTS

Weight can affect pregnancy and baby

Since most Americans have a tendency to be overweight, let me say here that obesity isn’t just linked to infertility, it has also been linked to premature births, and even birth defects.[1]  You should address your weight issues before you try to conceive because you don’t want to be dieting when pregnant.  There also seems to be evidence that conception is less likely to occur when body weight is declining.

SEE ALSO: PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS AND BIRTH DEFECTS OVER 40 (getpregnantover40.com)

Here is a chart which should help you evaluate whether or not your weight is in the normal range by calculating your body mass index or BMI:

1.      Multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and divide that number by your height in inches
2.      Divide the result of #1 again by your height in inches

A score below 18.5 indicates being underweight.
Between 18.5 and 24.9 means a healthy body weight.
Between 25 and 29.9 means you are overweight.
Between 30 and 39.9 indicates obesity
A score of 40 or higher indicates morbid obesity

CAN I GET PREGNANT WITH HIGH FSH?

What is FSH anyway?  It stands for follicle stimulating hormone.  FSH tends to rise when a women is getting near menopause because your body is trying harder and harder to get follicles to develop and the hormone rises to accomplish this.  Usually fertility doctors will test your FSH and look for values under 10.  Many times, they will recommend donor eggs because high FSH may yield poor results when undergoing IVF.
So the magic question is, "Can I get pregnant with high FSH?".  Well ideally you wouldn't have high FSH if you want to get pregnant, but there are documented cases of women who got pregnant with an FSH value of over 100! As you can see, the science of fertility is anything but static or exact.  There

are many things that can lead to a couple getting pregnant.  I have also read research that older women have a higher rate of multiples even if they aren't undergoing fertility treatment.  This is because their FSH is higher and their ovaries are stimulated to release more eggs.

But she also believes she has more patience now and is in a better emotional and psychological position to give Rose the best possible upbringing.

ARCUATE UTERUS AND GETTING PREGNANT

If you don't know what an arcuate uterus is, it has sort of a heart shape to it.  I was diagnosed with an mild arcuate uterus, but I wound up having a normal pregnancy.  I doubt it was related to my
miscarriages.   Before birth, the uterus is formed with the fusion of the two Müllerian ducts. During this fusion, the two ducts create a single cavity. But with an arcuate uterus, the process is incomplete

Having an arcuate uterus is rarely associated with reproductive failure unlike some other uterine abnormalities.  Whether or not an arcuate uterus can affect your ability to get pregnant and stay pregnant comes up frequently and I have devoted a page on my website to this and other uterine abnormalities.

NAIL POLISH AND NAIL PRODUCT AND BIRTH DEFECTS

Nail Polish and Nail Polish Remover - Dangers

I previously posted an article about some of the dangerous ingredients in nail polish, but there are also dangers with using solvents which may be in some nail polish removers. There is some disagreement withing the scientific community about the seriousness of the threat, but when I was pregnant, I stayed away from both nail polish and nail polish remover.

A study published in the New York Times found a possible connection between birth defects and solvents.  Solvents are the chemicals which help to dissolve and remove the nail polish.  Animal
studies show that these chemicals cause birth defects when administered in high doses.  There also seems to be a higher rate of birth defects in women based on questioning them on their exposure to these chemicals after having a miscarriage or after having a baby with a birth defect.  These defects included deafness, club foot and spina bifida.

THYROID PROBLEMS CAN AFFECT PREGNANCY

Pregnancy Over 40 and The Thyroid

I had terrible morning sickness (which lasted all day) for the first three months of my pregnancy.
Although my thyroid function was tested many times and considered to be normal, I found this article about how hyperthyroidism can cause not only morning sickness, but other pregnancy complications. Read more:

SEE ALSO: THYROID, INFERTILITY AND MISCARRIAGE (getpregnantover40.com)

"In pregnancy, hyperthyroidism can aggravate morning sickness into the much more debilitating hyperemesis gravidarum, requiring hospitalization for rehydration. (In my practice, anyone with

morning sickness is evaluated for thyroid function again after the initial labs.) But this just covers the mother. Hyperthyroidism can impact the pregnancy, too, with increased risk toward preterm labor, premature deliveries, low birth weight infants, and pregnancy induced hypertension (pre-eclampsia). The antibodies that make the mother's thyroid overreact can pass through the placenta to the baby, causing hyperthyroidism in the fetus, too.

Because pregnancy tones down a woman's immune response to everything (so that she won't reject her baby), immune disease-caused hyperthyroidism may cool down after a temporary surge of activity at 15 weeks, but the medical community isn't in agreement about the studies on this area. However, based on this theory, a doctor should be wary of "thyrotoxicosis" in the early to mid second trimester as well."

IS IT EASIER TO GET PREGNANT AFTER MISCARRIAGE?

Recent research has shown that there is not need to delay trying to get pregnant again after having a miscarriage.  Assuming you and your partner are emotionally ready to try again, and assuming you did not have surgery like a D&C to remove the nonviable pregnancy, it should be safe to try again.
However, there are many who claim that you may actually be more fertile after a miscarriage and it may actually be easier to get pregnant.  There are differing opinions on this subject...but I will say that once I started getting pregnant on my own, I got pregnant multiple times until I had my

successful pregnancy which led to the birth of my daughter.  My basic story is that I went through fertility treatments (inseminations and IVF) and got pregnant, but miscarriage (one was ectopic).  I finally got so frustrated that I threw in the towel and said I just wasn't going to try anymore.  But, once I got all of the fertility drugs and hormones out of my system, I started getting pregnant on my own.  Yes, I had multiple miscarriages...but I kept getting pregnant.  Was I more fertile?  Maybe!

OMEGA 3 HEALTHY FATS HELP POST PARTUM

Good Fats Like Omega 3's May Help With Postpartum Depression

It seems the more I read about food, nutrition, and the importance of diet,  the more I hear about how we need more "good fats" every day or every meal.  Good fats come in the form of "omega 3's".
Not only are Omega 3's good for fertility in men and women, but they can help with everything from heart disease, to getting pregnant, to depression. Here is an article about how the lack of Omega 3's may contribute to post-partum depression because your body uses more of these fats while you are pregnant.

SEE ALSO: FOODS FOR FERTILITY AND PREGNANCY (getpregnantover40.com)

From the article

http://getpregnantover40.com/saint-gerard-for-fertility.htm

Many psychiatrists treat depression with drugs that raise brain levels of serotonin. Now we learn that a diet deficient in omega-3 fatty acids may lower brain levels of serotonin and can cause depression. Studies show that depression is associated with low levels of red blood cell membrane and low intake of omega-3 fatty acids, that increased ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is associated with increased severity of depression. Depression is 60 times more common in New Zealand (6 percent) than in Japan (.12 percent); the difference may be explained by the high intake of omega-3-rich fish by the Japanese.

Post-partum depression is common in women after they give birth. Pregnancy uses up huge amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Women with the lowest blood levels of omega-3s are the ones most likely to suffer post-partum depression.

DOES CHICKPOX HURT MEN'S SPERM AND WOMEN IN PREGNANCY?

CHICKEN POX, MENS FERTILITY AND CHICKEN POX IN PREGNANCY

When I was a little girl, we did not have a chicken pox vaccine, and most of us came down with it. It was a nasty illness because you wound up with these little red scabs all over your body. They eventually scarred over and went away, but, even though I was in pre-school, I remember it well.
But what about chicken pox in adulthood?  Many men wonder if Varicella or chicken pox will hurt their fertility, I have an article on my site that addresses mens fertility and chicken pox (click here: getpregnantover40.com) It is definitely something you do not want to get in pregnant and here are some recommendations for prevention from the CDC:
All pregnant women should talk to a healthcare provider to determine if they are protected against chickenpox. For pregnant women, any of the following are evidence of protection against chickenpox:
Documentation of two doses of varicella vaccine
Blood test showing immunity to varicella
Diagnosis or verification by a health care provider of a history of chickenpox or herpes zoster, also known as shingles
http://getpregnantover40.com/fertility-bracelet.htm
Click here for our complete line of fertility and pregnancy bracelets

If a woman has never had chickenpox, the best way to protect against chickenpox is to get vaccinated. Women should receive the chickenpox vaccine at least 30 days before becoming pregnant. Women should not receive the chickenpox vaccine within 30 days of pregnancy or during pregnancy. As soon as a pregnant woman who is not protected against chickenpox delivers her baby, she should be vaccinated against chickenpox. The first dose of vaccine can be given before she leaves the hospital, and the second dose at the 6-8-week post-partum visit. The vaccine is safe even for mothers who are nursing.

Women who are thinking about getting pregnant but are not protected against chickenpox should get vaccinated at least one to three months before becoming pregnant. Women should not get vaccinated during pregnancy or during the 30 days before becoming pregnant.

If a pregnant woman is not protected against chickenpox, people who live with her should be protected. If close contacts have not already had chickenpox, vaccination of these contacts is the most effective way to protect a pregnant woman against chickenpox

Pregnant women should stay away from anyone who has chickenpox. This includes people who have been vaccinated and then get a very mild form of chickenpox, sometimes called "breakthrough" chickenpox (usually little or no fever and fewer than 50 skin lesions). "Breakthrough" chickenpox is still contagious.

If a pregnant woman is not protected against chickenpox and finds out that she has been in contact with someone who has chickenpox, she should call her doctor immediately.
