C SECTIONS MORE COMMEN IN SHORT WOMEN

Pregnancy Over 40 C-Sections And Stature Related

It's not always fair, but the world and our biology doesn't always cater to shorter people.
Even in childbirth, shorter stature may be statistically associated with a higher c-section rate. I'm a petite person myself, but the good news is, I had a normal delivery. So, take statistics with a grain of salt. Read more about the study on C-Sections and Stature:

Results. The Caesarean section rate was 17.7%. Beside newborn
somatometric characteristics, such as head dimensions and birth weight, maternal
stature was significantly associated with the rate of caesarean section.

See Also: Early Pregnancy Symptoms (www.getpregnantover40.com)

With decreasing maternal stature the risk of Caesarean sections increased significantly.
Especially among short and very short women
maternal stature had a significant impact on the mode of delivery, while, in
contrast, no significant associations between the mode of delivery and maternal
age, prepregnancy weight status, pregnancy weight gain as well as pelvic dimensions
were found.
Conclusion. Short stature is significantly associated with the risk of
Caesarean delivery.

SORE BREASTS: EARLY SIGN OF PREGNANCY

Pregnancy Over 40, Breast Changes

Sore breasts can definitely be one of the first signs of pregnancy.
I had sore breasts as early as day 25-26 of my cycle for most of my pregnancies. However, I've also had sore breasts right before my period was about to start. So, If you're trying to figure out if your pregnant, there's probably a few other factors to take into account as explained in this article:

Before you’ve even carried out a home pregnancy test, you may be alerted to the possibility by feeling a sense of heaviness in the breasts, or perhaps noticed some swelling. These symptoms are particularly noticeable at bedtime when you’re attempting to get comfortable, or when you are carrying out your normal exercise routine. The new buxom you could be expecting a visit from the

proverbial stork.

Pregnancy sets a number of processes in motion in a woman’s body. The change in hormones can cause breast tenderness, darkening of the nipples and an overall increase in sensation in the area. These changes will start to occur from as early as one to two weeks following conception.

Be advised, however, that increased breast soreness can be a symptom of PMT, and your wish to become pregnant could be heightening your awareness of the sensations.

HOW YOGA CAN HELP IN PREGNANCY

Yoga and Pregnancy: Let's Get Down Dog!

Guest Post By Liza D Janda

Whether you are a few weeks or a few months pregnant, you are going to want to keep building your strength, because whether you're ready or not you are growing another human being throughout this pregnancy, which along with labor takes energy and strength.  Prenatal Yoga helps to build strength and stability in your upper and lower body, legs, and back. Building strength in these areas helps tremendously in carrying that added weight, in preventing back pain in pregnancy, and will help compensate for the balance changes that will quickly be headed your way!

________

Balance:
Have you been feeling a bit clumsy lately? Welcome to pregnancy!
Between the extra pounds and surging hormones, you may have been feeling a little wobbly. Yoga

will help tremendously during these changes; from your weight, to body shape, to recovery after birth. There are many different poses to help with balance and strength. One of the more celebrated poses is Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Savanasa). This pose uses every muscle in your body as it stretches and tones. It also helps your baby move in to a head-down position with the aid of gravity. It takes pressure off the pelvic floor and lower back as you support your own body weight with your arms, legs, and core muscles.
Back Pains:
If you're newly pregnant you may not have any complaints about back pain in pregnancy yet, but in no time it will make an ugly appearance. Most moms will attest to this.
Back pain in pregnancy usually increases as your uterus and baby grow, which causes more forward pull on your back, known as "Lordosis". If you are experiencing this, I am sure that exercise is the last thing you think you want to do, but prenatal yoga can actually prevent this pain and make it go away altogether with regular practice. If you do only one thing, try the Cow and Cat Stretch sequence (Bitilasana).  Get on your hands and knees and arch your back as you inhale, and round your back on the exhale. It feels great!
Labor:
It's only natural to get nervous or have anxiety about labor, especially for a first baby. It doesn't help that everyone and their moms have some drama-filled birth story to tell you.  Believe it or not, yoga's practice of deep abdominal breathing helps you relax, and relieve anxiety. It causes your body to produce endorphins and reduce your perception of pain.
You will learn to be in tune with your breathing, recognizing every breath you take, in and out. The calm atmosphere with peaceful music playing sets the stage. All of your worries will soon disappear as you learn to enjoy the moment. This serenity actually leads to a deeper bond with your baby, knowing every breath you take, every beat of your heart nourish and nurture both you and your baby.
Not only can yoga increase your strength, it can also help you to have an easier birth.
Prenatal yoga is amazing for helping to open your hips. There are many positions and stretches you will learn throughout your classes that will prepare you and your baby for birth, helping your baby drop into the right position for labor and help with the pushing phase of labor and birth.
What Have You Got To Lose?
Here's a short list: anxiety, back pain, sciatica pain, pregnancy discomfort. You will gain confidence in yourself and your body as you prepare for labor. Maybe you'll make new friends when you will meet a handful of pregnant moms who are experiencing all the same things you are. So, mamas, get going. You are going to love it! "Let's Get Down Dog!"

THE UPSIDE OF PREGNANCY OVER 40

Pregnancy Over 40, Our Generation

Mitch Miller, Lawrence Welk, Ed Sullivan, Sherrie Lewis (Lambchop,)...if you know who I'm talking about you must be somewhere in my age range. I often feel privileged to have had a baby later in life. Not only do I know all of the above entertainers, but I know I'm going to know everything about the new hip entertainers as my daughter grows up. She's not only going to teach me what's "cool", but she's going to keep me active.

You know the old saying..."kids keep you young". I do believe that's true. I frequently run into people I went to school with with since I live very close to where I grew up. I must say many of them have "old people!" Most are empty nesters with their kids off to college or even married. Some have become grandparents (with grandkids older than my daughter). I guess they feel entitled to kick back and observe life rather than getting out there and living it. It's almost like I have redefined my peer group. I now hang out with other (younger) moms and I never bring up my age (afterall, it is just a number).
let their age get the best of them. Not only have they slid into "frumpyhood", but they're acting like

Yes, there are times I would like to sit in my recliner and watch TV without the constant noise and interruption. I've learned to record the few things I care to see and watch it after my daughter goes to bed. What's so great about watching TV anyway???
Us older parents are more motivated to stay in shape and take care of ourselves...so we are around to see our grandchildren. Statistically speaking, women who have their first child over the age of 40 are four times more likely to live to be 100!

SIGNS OF EARLY PREGNANCY YOU MAY NOT RECOGNIZE

When I was trying to conceive, I became an expert in monitoring my body for any possible sign of pregnancy.  Yes, it's possible that I read too much into every little ache or pain or flutter in my stomach, however I went through many failed pregnancies before I finally had my successful pregnancy which led to the birth of my daughter.  I did find there were some symptoms that were

definitely associated with pregnancy and not just the run-of-the-mill PMS symptoms that you might feel the week before or a few days before you get your period.  It's amazing how such a microscopic change in your body can produce such pronounced physical changes.  One woman from my infertility support group actually said she felt herself conceive!

REASONS FOR 3RD TRIMESTER NAUSEA

Common Reasons For Pregnancy Nausea in Third Trimester

Guest Post By Lisa C Packer

For most pregnant women, nausea and vomiting are most likely to develop in the first month or two of pregnancy and start tapering off by the end of the first trimester-by week 18 at the outside. But as many as 20 percent of women may find that their symptoms of pregnancy nausea lasting into the third trimester, and 5 percent experience nausea and vomiting right up to delivery.
For some women, morning sickness stops after a few weeks at the start of their pregnancy, only to return again around week 27 or after. Still other women have no nausea at all in early stages, and are quite surprised to find it developing in the last three months.

Of course, at any time, a sudden onset of nausea and vomiting can be due to a virus or other illness. Especially if it is accompanied by diarrhea, it could be the flu or food poisoning. If such symptoms are severe at any time during pregnancy, it's important to be wary of dehydration and make sure to
replenish the fluids being lost.

Starting around week 27, hormone activity tends to pick up again, after having leveled off somewhat for most women during the mid-stages of pregnancy. Women who maintain high levels of the hCG hormone are particularly likely to find that their NVP also continues throughout pregnancy.

Another instigator of nausea and vomiting the later stages of pregnancy is simply the size of the growing fetus. At this time it's most common for nausea to strike immediately after a meal, often accompanied by heartburn. As the baby gets bigger, the uterus exerts more pressure on the stomach causing heartburn and nausea when the stomach is filled. At this point, stomach capacity is even smaller, and it's even more important to stick to smaller meals to reduce this stress.
So nausea in the third trimester isn't necessarily unusual or worrisome. However, there are a couple of serious late-pregnancy liver diseases that can also lead to nausea and vomiting, including acute fatty liver of pregnancy and HELLP syndrome. Though both of these ailments are truly rare, they are also life-threatening if untreated. For this reason, doctors now recommend that any woman experiencing nausea and vomiting accompanied by upper abdominal pain and "malaise" in the third trimester of pregnancy have her liver enzymes and renal function evaluated, along with a complete blood count.
Also, any woman who is experiencing nausea and vomiting in combination with severe headaches, facial swelling, sudden swelling, abdominal pain, and visual disturbances (e.g., seeing spots) should call her physician immediately. These are signs of preeclampsia, an illness that can develop quite rapidly anytime after the 20th week of pregnancy and that affects as many as 8 percent of pregnancies. Preeclampsia can cause strokes and kidney damage, liver failure, blot clots, fluid in the lungs, seizures, and even death of both the child and the mother.
There is one final factor that can lead to nausea in late pregnancy-though in this instance it is a bit easier to diagnose. If nausea, vomiting and diarrhea coincide with cramps, backache, pelvic pressure, and contractions occurring less than 10 minutes apart, labor has begun.
While not uncommon, then, nausea late in any pregnancy merits a consultation with your care provider. In most cases there are ordinary and harmless reasons for it, but there is an outside chance that is a symptom of one of these several serious illnesses that occasionally arise during the late weeks of pregnancy.

DREAM INTERPRETATION IN PREGNANCY

Pregnancy: The Psychology of Dreams

Guest Post By Liza D Janda
"Pregnancy dreams are nature's way of assisting the woman through the process of transformation from woman to mother." - Raina M. Paris, author of The Mother-to-Be's Dream Book
Your pregnancy is going to bring about plenty of physical changes, and there are even a few stereotypical mental changes that often come to mind, but what I'm sure you haven't thought of yet is what your dreams during pregnancy are going to be like.
Or, perhaps, you're already experiencing the gradual progression of bizarre dancing behind the back of closed eyelids and just want to know... what is going on here? I'm going mad!
You're not going mad, I assure you. These dreams are perfectly normal and perfectly healthy; in fact, there's even a science to this profound mental expansion that you should take a closer look at. They're not just dreams, they're an awakening of sorts.
Dreams During Pregnancy: A Profound Progression
According to Paris, each of your trimesters will bring about a different stage of dreaming that falls in

line with your body's mental and physical state as it prepares itself to give birth.

  • First Trimester Blasts from the Past

Any unresolved issues that you may have tend to resurface as your body and mind begin to fully realize that you're about to undergo a major life milestone; one which will press the reset button in a lot of ways.

  • What to Expect: Unresolved issues in the form of childhood memories, ex-boyfriends, traumatic life experiences, or people who revolved around major turning points.
  • Themes: At this stage in your pregnancy, these dreams will represent your vulnerability, which will often be symbolized via nakedness. Due to this vulnerability, your mind may react protectively, or territorially, which could become a factor within the dream.
  • Second Trimester Bonding & Anxiety

SEE ALSO: CHAKRAS FOR LIFE AND FERTILITY (getpregnantover40.com)

Once you're this far along in your pregnancy, you become keenly aware of the life growing inside of you and start bonding with your infant as an actual person, profoundly connected to you. Dreams during pregnancy, at this stage, will reflect that bonding experience and it will also become a worry for you to protect it.

  • What to Expect: Dreams of animals, and creatures in mother-nature, bonding with their offspring, which can be followed by anxiety-filled dreams of leaving your baby somewhere, or of it being born with some deformity.
  • Themes: These dreams are representations of the bond that is forming between you and your child, which can inspire new fears of losing that bond. These dreams during pregnancy are normal, and simply mean that you care about your child and are worried about it even when sleeping; a theme that will repeat long after the baby is born.
  • Third Trimester Imagery & Star Status

At this point in your pregnancy, your body and mind are preparing for the act of giving birth as the date grows closer and closer.

  • What to Expect: Vivid imagery of colossal acts of nature, i.e. tidal waves, volcano eruptions, hurricanes, tornadoes, dams bursting, etc. Celebrities may even make an appearance!
  • Themes: These images are representations of the act of giving birth itself, sometimes even becoming less symbolic, as you may dream of the entire act of giving birth. As for the celebrities, well... you are the star in this, so you might just see stars!

It's important to keep in mind that no matter how bizarre these dreams during pregnancy seem to get, they are a perfectly normal symbolism of what you're going through. In fact, in a way, they're helping to prepare you for what's coming, so pay attention, and embrace them!
If you don't believe me, believe Dr. DiLeo:
"For first-time mothers especially, the bizarre dreams are a very real acknowledgement of the emotional investment of a pregnancy. This responsibility can weigh a bit heavy. I explain to my pregnant patients that strange, anxiety-producing dreams are simply the psyche's way of processing all that the conscious mind is already rationalizing." - Obstetrician,Dr. Gerard DiLeo, MD

HOW AROMATHERAPY CAN HELP IN PREGNANCY

 Aromatherapy For Pregnancy Discomforts

It makes sense that with such a heightened sense of smell during pregnancy, aromatherapy could be helpful. Because of my enhanced sense of smell, I realized how may things may actually be toxic out there.  I believe nausea is your body's way of telling you to stay away from something.
See also: www.getpregnantover40.com for more on alternative medicine, ayurvedic medicine and home rememdies
For example, when I was near one of those plug-in air fresheners, I would almost always gag and almost throw up....I'm sure it was filled with tons of toxic chemicals.  Here is a site which explains how aromatherapy can help in pregnancy:

From the site:

Morning sickness is one of the most common problems to occur in early pregnancy.

Therapeutic-grade essential oils can be very helpful for this.

Applying the digestive blend to the outer rim of the ear, behind the ear (on the mastoid bone) and around the navel, as well as taking 1-2 drops as a nutritional supplement, can be very helpful.

Another oil you could use is peppermint. Placing a few drops of this oil in a bowl of hot water and inhaling the vapors provides excellent results. Just be certain to keep your eyes closed while inhaling. Peppermint contains menthol, and its vapors, if too concentrated, can sting the eyes.

If you're confident of the quality of your oils, placing a drop or two of peppermint oil on your tongue, and letting it dissolve there before swallowing is also helpful. However, unless the oil is Grade A, AFNOR-certified, do not take internally. It may contain chemical adulterants that you would not want in your system — or in your child's.

Patchouli and spearmint are also helpful. Apply behind the ears and over the abdomen. They may also be taken as dietary supplements.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation
Scenting the air can be very relaxing or rejuvenating, and it's easy to do. Just add 2 to 6 drops of therapeutic-grade essential oil to a mister bottle, and spray it into the room. Or, you could put 2 to 4 drops of the oil into a clay diffuser to add a soft fragrance to the air. Actually, just putting a few drops of oil behind your ears or on your chest will diffuse the oil very nicely.

As a simple alternative to this, you can do what I do: When I'm trying to relax, or am having trouble sleeping, I'll put 2 to 6 drops of a gentle essential oil, such as lavender, on a cotton ball and place it on my pillow. Sometimes, since it's non-staining, I put lavender on my hand, and then rub my hand over the pillow. You can also drop the oil directly on the pillow. This creates a very soothing, balancing effect.

But, something that's very important to remember: When diffusing essential oils, never heat the oils. It will change their chemical structure, fracturing the delicate aromatic molecules, possibly changing a very therapeutic oil into something quite toxic. (Remember, a therapeutic-grade oil is always distilled at low temperatures to preserve the chemical integrity of the oil. It makes no sense to burn an oil that is so carefully crafted. See the article What's so wrong with my scented candle? for more details.) Always use a cold-air diffuser. Heating the oils with a candle or potpourri burner — or an electrical charge — is not diffusing. It's not even aromatherapy.
