GOOD NEWS ON BIRTH DEFECTS OVER 40

Much has been written about pregnancy over the age of 40 which can scare any woman half to death.  When I found out I was finally pregnant with my daughter, my joy was quickly squelched by all of the doom and gloom presented to me by the well meaning medical professionals. I was given a list of all the possible complications that could occur during my pregnancy due to the fact that I was 44.
And guess what?  I had a completely normal pregnancy and normal vaginal delivery.  So there!
But what about birth defects and pregnancy complications over the age of 40?  Are they that much higher?  Not really.  Read more:

OLDER AGE PREGNANCY = MENTALLY SHARPER

Women who have a pregnancy over the age of 35 (and over 40) were found to be mentally sharper as they aged.  According to this article, they theorize that the surge of reproductive hormones can be beneficial as women age.  Read more:

The main hormones at play are estrogen and progesterone. In animal studies, estrogen has a beneficial impact on brain chemistry, function and structure; progesterone is linked with growth and development of brain tissue, Karim said.

The study, published this month in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, includes 830 women who, on average, were 60 years old. The data was adjusted for age, race and ethnicity, income and education.
Participants were given a series of tests that included assessments of verbal memory (remembering a list of words or retelling a story after some distraction), psychomotor speed, attention and concentration, planning, visual perception and memory.
Previous research has shown that many women experience brainpower and memory declines in their postmenopausal years. An outpouring of estrogen and progesterone, especially in later life, appears to be beneficial, Karim said.

PREGNANCY, MOTHERHOOD WORRYING, NORMAL?

 Pregnancy Over 40 - worrying

Motherhood may contribute to your worry, but according to the article below, women tend to worry more than men in general.
That doesn't surprise most of us, but the article helps to explain why.
http://getpregnantover40.com/fertility-necklace.htm
Click here for the Fertility/Pregnancy Symbol Necklace

From the article:

Scientists have known that on the whole, females of all ages tend to worry more and have more intense worries than males. Women also tend to perceive more risk in situations and grow more anxious than men.

Now we know why.

Women are more likely than men to believe that past experiences accurately forecast the future, according to two new studies.

The research, involving both 3- to 6-year-olds and adults of both genders, tested the extent to which participants' thought that worry can be caused by thinking that a bad event that happened in the past could happen again in the future. (This skill, in its simplest form, is critical to social understanding as it is important to making decisions and assessing risk.)

JANET JACKSON GIVES PREGNANCY UPDATE

I posted in the past that 50 year old Janet Jackson was pregnant.  Although we don't really know all of the circumstances that led to her pregnancy, I couldn't be happier for her!  Everyone deserves to have a baby no matter what their age.  We finally have an update on how she is doing!
From

Janet Jackson offered a rare personal update as she nears the birth of her first child, assuring fans she's doing well in her first tweet since confirming her pregnancy.
"Hey you guys.. It's been awhile.. but I'm still listening," the 50-year-old vocalist wrote on Twitter. "I feel your love and prayers.. Thank you.. and I'm doing well." (nydailynews)

Within hours of Jackson’s Twitter status becoming public, a mass of media outlets — from Perez Hilton to US Weekly, E! News and even Emirates Woman — covered the short, but sweet social media reach-out, and treated it as front-page news. To say that it was quite the feat somehow shortchanges the actual impact, but considering the way the entertainment world has continuously negated Jackson’s reach and influence, it also serves as a bit of comeuppance toward her many naysayers.(inquisitor)

HIGH FRUCTOSE DIET IN PREGNANCY HARMS PLACENTA, FETAL GROWTH

Fructose is a kind of sugar which is present in fruits as well as processed foods in the form of "high fructose corn syrup".  Unfortunately, it can wreak havoc on our bodies and in pregnancy it can lead to complications in the placenta and the future growth of the baby.  Read more:

SEE ALSO: ARE YOUR EARS RINGING IN PREGNANCY? (getpregnantover40.com)

Consuming a high-fructose diet during pregnancy may cause defects in the placenta and restrict fetal growth, potentially increasing a baby's risk for metabolic health problems later in life, according to research in mice and people by a team at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Studying mice, the researchers found elevated uric acid and triglycerides in otherwise healthy mice who were fed a high-fructose diet during pregnancy. Additionally, the mice developed smaller fetuses and larger placentas than those fed standard rodent chow.
Genetically, Moley said, a small fetus may become wired to grow more after birth than a normal-sized fetus. "The body tries to compensate for the small growth in utero," Moley said. "These babies can become kids and then adults struggling with obesity and other health problems."

ACETAMINOPHEN IN PREGNANCY LINKED TO AUTISM

As a general rule, pregnant women should avoid the use of any type of drug.  Even drugs that are considered "safe" may have consequences that we don't know about.  Here is an article about how acetaminophen may be associated with autism and ADHD.  Read more:

The researchers found that 43 percent of the children assessed at the age of 1 and 41 percent of those assessed at age 5 were born to mothers who used acetaminophen in the first 32 weeks of pregnancy.

Compared with children born to mothers who did not take acetaminophen during pregnancy, the researchers found that those whose mothers used acetaminophen in the first 32 weeks of pregnancy were 30 percent more likely at age 5 to have attention impairments, often found in children with autism or ADHD.
Children prenatally exposed to acetaminophen were also more likely to have symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsivity at the age of 5. Those who had been persistently exposed to the drug performed worse on tests of attention, impulsivity, and visual speed processing.

AIR TRAVEL GUIDELINES IN PREGNANCY

Doctor's Advice on Pregnancy - Air Travel

Guest Post By Dr. Sloan Charles, M.D.

Being a medical doctor, I have been approached quite often by pregnant mothers to issue a letter of fitness prior to their travel by plane.
Usually, the airline rules and regulations clearly states that pregnancy below 28 weeks would be allowed to fly after signing a "Release & Indemnity Form" to absolve the airline of any liabilities should anything unforeseen happen. Pregnancy between 28-34 weeks would require a medical certificate from the attending doctor stating the date and fitness to fly. Pregnancy at and beyond 35 weeks are not allowed to travel by air.

SEE ALSO: STRANGE EARLY PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT (getpregnantover40.com)

In addition to that, expectant mother should be informed that
1) The letter of fitness issued by the attending doctor MUST be within 1week prior to the date of
SACRAL CHAKRA NECKLACE
departure. Thus, it is only wise to consult the doctor and get the ultrasound scan done and letter issue after the date of departure has been arranged.
2) Generally, it is wise to avoid travel by plane during the first trimester (0-12 weeks pregnancy) as miscarriages takes place at the period. This is more so if the pregnant mother has history of recurring pregnancy losses.
3) Relatively speaking, it is better to travel by air in the second trimester (13-27 weeks pregnancy) also known as honeymoon period because many of the unpleasant effects of early pregnancy have ended. During this period, the pregnancy is more established and more stable.
4) Pregnancy itself is a risk factor to develop DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and coupled with the long distance air travel, the risk is higher.
DVT : A condition where a clot is formed in the veins of the leg and may lead to serious consequences to health.
5) Always inform the airline and check the airline policy in carrying the pregnant passengers.

WHY DO YOUR EARS RING IN PREGNANCY

I have had bouts of tinnitus over the years and women who are pregnant complain of this problem as well.  It can be very annoying and a burden to live with.  Tinnitus is also known as "ringing in the ears".  Usually it is a constant high pitched sound.  Pregnant women have so many changes going on in their body that may trigger this condition.  For starters, you're gaining weight and some of that is just sheer blood volume.  This can raise blood pressure which may trigger the condition.

PREVENTING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN PREGNANCY

Decreasing Your Risk For Preeclampsia (High Blood Pressure) During Pregnancy

Guest Post By Dr. Mark Zakowski

Preeclampsia, or high blood pressure during pregnancy, remains one of the top diseases of pregnant
women. Preeclampsia today causes premature delivery, major complications, and even death of mom and baby. A whopping 7-10% of all pregnant women develop signs of preeclampsia. What can you do about it? New evidence shows that vitamin supplementation can reduce the risk of preeclampsia and the terrible problems that it can cause!
Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. Affecting at least 5-8%, and as high as 10% of all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some pregnant women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.
Severe preeclampsia requires not only treatment of blood pressure but also childbirth of the baby, regardless of the gestational age. Under these adverse conditions, the baby is not going to continue growing, and even more dangerous - mom's life is at risk!

SEE ALSO: THE REAL RATE OF BIRTH DEFECTS AND PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS OVER THE AGE OF 40 (getpregnantover40.com)

Those at risk include:

    http://getpregnantover40.com/chakras-for-fertility.htm
  • Women less than 20 years old
  • Women older than 40 years old
  • Obese women
  • Women with preeclampsia in a prior pregnancy
  • Having a family history of preeclampsia
  • Twins or triplets (multiple gestation)
  • Pre-existing medical problems:
  • Chronic hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Anti-phospholipid syndrome

The main signs of preeclampsia are high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Pregnant women with preeclampsia may also have:

  • Swelling (edema) of the hands and feet
  • Sudden weight gain (5 or more pounds in one week)
  • Problems with vision, such as blurriness or flashing lights
  • Severe headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Intense pain in the upper right part of the belly.

Pregnant women with mild preeclampsia often have no obvious symptoms. So if you have it, you may not suspect that anything is wrong.
Preeclampsia is usually detected during a routine prenatal visit. That's one reason why it's important to keep all your appointments during your pregnancy. During prenatal visits, the health care provider measures your blood pressure and checks your urine for protein. If preeclampsia is diagnosed, it can usually be managed before it becomes serious.
SOLVING THE PROBLEM... NATURALLY
Evidence shows you CAN decrease your chance of getting preeclampsia during pregnancy.
The oral intake of Vitamin C 1000 mg and Vitamin E 400 IU each day significantly reduces the chance of getting preeclampsia.
You should take 1000mg of vitamin C and 400IU of Vitamin E every day, starting as soon as you know you're pregnant! Studies by Chappell (Lancet 1999 and Am J Obstet Gynecol 2002) have shown that taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C and 400 IU of Vitamin E a day beginning early in pregnancy can reduce the risk of preeclampsia by a staggering 76 percent. Preeclampsia is one of the biggest causes of premature birth, low birth weight babies, can lead to liver and bleeding problems in mom, and even death! Remember, up to 15% of preterm births are a result of preeclampsia.
However, starting antioxidant therapy once preeclampsia becomes a factor is not effective - it is too late! Even starting vitamins therapy at 24 weeks or later may be too late, as many of the changes that cause preeclampsia will already have occurred.
Taking care of your health will help ensure the health of your baby during pregnancy and a safe delivery when giving birth.

SPOTTING IN PREGNANCY DOESN'T MEAN MISCARRIAGE

Does Spotting Mean You’re Going To Miscarry?

Spotting isn’t necessarily a good sign, but it certainly doesn’t mean you’re going to miscarry.  I’ve heard estimates as high as 25-30% of all pregnancies have some spotting.  This can be cause by a variety of conditions from yeast infections to implantation bleeding.  I had spotting with all my pregnancies, including my successful pregnancy.  When I was pregnant with my daughter, I spotted for a full three months.  It appeared, from the ultrasound, that some implantation blood was trapped between the uterus and the gestational sac.  It was coming out very slowly which led to the spotting.

SEE ALSO: MISCARRIAGE OVER 40 (getpregnantover40.com)

I also had a few other incidences of spotting during my successful pregnancy.  Although no definitive reason was found, it obviously didn’t lead to a miscarriage.  One study found that spotting and light episodes of bleeding are not associated with miscarriage, especially if only lasting 1–2 days.(1)
If you are pregnant and you are spotting, it’s a good idea to see your doctor.  Spotting can be an indicator of more severe problems, but having said that, I found the medical community to be rather  unconcerned with most cases of spotting (obviously it’s quite common).  If nothing else, they can help put your mind at ease

SAINT GERARD, SAINT OF PREGNANCY, MOTHERHOOD

Many readers of my website and blogs have expressed an interest in saints for fertility, pregnancy and motherhood.  One saint which I have devoted a page on my website to is Saint Gerard.
http://www.getpregnantover40.com/saint-gerard-for-fertility.htm
Saint Gerard Majella has an interesting story.   Majella's last recorded miracle is one that many credit toward his becoming the patron of expectant mothers. Shortly before his death, Majella encountered a young girl. He had dropped his handkerchief and she set out to return it, only to be told to keep it. Majella told her she "may need it someday." Years after Majella's passing, the young girl became married and with child. She unexpectedly went into labor and was on the verge of losing her baby. She called for Majella's handkerchief to be applied to her. Almost immediately, her pain abated and she proceeded to give birth to a healthy child.

MASSAGE IN PREGNANCY: SAFE OR NOT?

Is Pregnancy Massage Truly Safe?

Guest Post By Fran Kehoe

Women have aches, tension and pain when they are pregnant just like they do when they are not carrying a baby. Pregnant massage is effective in relieving their discomfort. However, is pregnancy massage truly safe for an expectant mother?
Benefits from Massage for an Expectant Mother
Research backs up the fact that expectant mother receive benefits from massage such as a lift in mood, reduction of stress, and relief of aches and pains. It can even improve the birth process lessening the strain on the new-born. Massage even helps reduce stress hormones and elevate serotonin and dopamine levels, which improve mood.
Another benefit of massage during pregnancy is that swelling or edema is reduced. The massaging action helps the fluids move from the soft tissues they have settled in, this typically makes the joints less swollen. The fluids then are flushed out of the body with the other waste.

SEE ALSO: STRESS, INFERTILITY AND HOW STRESS CAN CAUSE MISCARRIAGE (getpregnantover40.com)

Types of Massage Approved for Pregnant Women
Shiatsu is one form of massage recommended for pregnant women, because it uses various points on the body to stimulate the body's qi or natural energy. Pressure is applied on these points to release the body's own natural healing powers. At times, a tapping motion also is used.
Another one that is safe for pregnant women is Swedish massage. This type using long strokes on the muscles to relax them and it also works to improve the mobility of joints. This massage also addresses certain problems that occur in the body, because of the changes in circulation during pregnancy.
Precautions
The expectant mother needs to make sure that the massage therapist is experienced with performing massage on pregnant women. Certain precautions do have to be taken such as the woman not lying on her back too long or flat on her stomach should be taken for one thing. There are special massage tables that are available at some places that allow room for the expanding belly. Other times the therapist will have the woman lie on her side.
In the first trimester, massage should not be performed over the lower part of the pelvic area where the uterus is located. The first trimester is tricky for some women to get past without having a miscarriage, so caution is warranted during this time. An expectant mother going through a high-risk pregnancy should avoid getting a massage. The chance is too great for problems under these circumstances.
As long as these precautions are followed, pregnancy massage is safe for the woman and foetus. The expectant mother needs to be as relaxed and happy as possible during her pregnancy. Otherwise, she could become depressed. This will make the pregnancy harder to get through and could harm the health of both mother and the foetus. Pregnancy massage can offer such relief for many of the discomfort that happens during this time. It is well worth using it to improve the mood and health of the expectant mother. Remember, a doctor should be consulted before the massage is performed just to make sure it will not cause a problem.
